Curry's Historic Extension
Golden State announced on Friday that Stephen Curry has signed a contract extension. According to ESPN's Shams Charania, the new agreement spans two years and is worth $116 million, and it gives Curry the option to opt out after the 2028-29 season. Before this, Curry was set to play the 2026-27 campaign on a single-year deal paying $62.3 million, a figure that had lifted his total career earnings to roughly $532 million, as tracked by Spotrac.[S1]
With the new extension, Spotrac projects Curry will carry a $55.8 million cap hit in 2027-28 and a $58 million cap hit the following year. By the end of the 2028-29 season, his career earnings are expected to reach around $645 million, making him the highest-paid NBA player of all time in terms of career salary, per Spotrac.[S1]
Surpassing NBA Legends
Curry's projected career earnings will place him ahead of Kevin Durant and LeBron James, whom Spotrac projects to earn $591 million and $589 million, respectively. No other player is currently on track to exceed $600 million in career earnings. Curry, Durant, and James are the only players expected to finish the upcoming season with more than $500 million in career salary.[S1]
Spotrac also projects that by 2031, Kawhi Leonard, Devin Booker, Paul George, Donovan Mitchell, Joel Embiid, and James Harden will join the half-billion-dollar club. Meanwhile, the Warriors are hopeful Curry can rebound from the right knee issues that affected his 2025-26 campaign when the team opens the regular season on Oct. 21 at the Los Angeles Lakers.[S1]
