Supporters gather early at the London court

A crowd of roughly 35 fans of Chris Brown assembled at Southwark Crown Court on the day of his sentencing, waiting for entry to the public gallery even though not all of them could be admitted. Among the first in the queue was Destiny Williams, who travelled from Birmingham. She had watched him perform in Toronto and Birmingham last year and had also attended a show in Los Angeles at SoFi Stadium this year.[S1]

Williams said she had come to back the singer, describing the day as a moment of history, and expressed hope that the outcome would be a fine or a suspended sentence. Charlie Gearing made the trip from Leeds accompanied by her mother Lizzie, who came despite having had a hip replacement. Lizzie described herself and her daughter as supporters and called Brown an excellent performer.[S1]

Charlie, who is 50, recalled meeting Brown at the Lowry Hotel ahead of his Manchester concert. She said she wanted to see him leave court as a free man and joked that she would have his signature tattooed on her hand if he signed it. Zoe Jones rose at 04:00 GMT to travel from Birmingham, calling herself his number one fan and recalling a meeting with him in Amsterdam. She argued that he deserves a chance and that everyone is only human.[S1]

Sonia McCalla, who lives in Hertfordshire, arrived at 08:15 to secure her place and stood sixth in line. She said she was there to support Brown, praised him as an amazing artist, and said she hoped the judge would impose a suspended sentence rather than send him to prison.[S1]

What the sentencing concerns

The hearing at Southwark Crown Court concerns a bottle attack at a London nightclub in 2023. Brown, a Grammy-winning US singer, has pleaded guilty to affray over the incident and now awaits the court's decision on his penalty.[S1][S3][S4][S5][S7][S8]

The case has drawn international coverage, with outlets across several countries reporting his arrival at the British court and the prospect that he could face jail. The sentencing follows his guilty plea and brings the proceedings to the stage where the judge sets the punishment.[S2][S6][S7]
