Brightline Prepares Chapter 11 Filing
Multiple financial news organizations, among them Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal, report that Brightline — the passenger rail service operating in Florida — could seek Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection within days. The company's aim is to reorganize over $1 billion of corporate debt while its Miami-to-Orlando trains continue to operate without interruption.[S1]
This development did not emerge suddenly. News 6 reported earlier in the year that an audit raised "substantial doubt" about whether Brightline could keep operating, since it lacked the liquid funds needed to cover its debt and other near-term obligations. That same audit recorded an additional $127 million loss for the prior year, with total debt standing at $2.26 billion.[S1]
Ridership and Revenue Growth
Meanwhile, Brightline has been adding both riders and revenue as gasoline prices rise. From January through May of 2026, the railroad served close to 1.5 million passengers, up 16% compared with the same period a year earlier, following a record 3.1 million riders and $214 million in revenue during 2025. The company expanded its schedule and cut fares to draw more short-distance travelers.[S1]
