A long-awaited breakthrough
Kimberly Birrell captured her first WTA Tour singles title on Sunday, defeating fellow Australian Maya Joint 6-4, 6-2 in the Korea Open final. The 28-year-old had previously reached two tour-level singles finals but lost both. This was the first all-Australian singles final on the WTA Tour since 2017.[S1]
In their first tour-level encounter, Joint started strongly, breaking early to lead 2-0. Birrell responded by breaking twice to take the opening set 6-4. After early breaks were exchanged in the second set, Birrell gained another break to move ahead and then broke Joint once more in the final game to close out the victory in 1 hour and 23 minutes.[S1]
Joint struggled with consistency, recording 41 unforced errors and 12 winners. Birrell posted 10 winners and 21 unforced errors. She converted six of 10 break points, while Joint converted three of six. With the win, Birrell, currently ranked No. 60 in the WTA PIF Rankings, is projected to make her Top 50 debut in the new rankings on Monday.[S1]
