A record built inning by inning

Milwaukee Brewers reliever Aaron Ashby entered Game 4 of the World Series on Tuesday, Oct. 27, carrying a scoreless run and left with a place in Major League Baseball's record book. The 28-year-old left-hander worked a perfect ninth inning against the Tampa Bay Rays, retiring all three hitters he faced to reach 16 2/3 consecutive scoreless postseason innings. That total moved him past Andrew Miller, who had thrown 16 straight scoreless innings for Cleveland in 2016.[S1]

Ashby did not stop at the record. He came back out for the 10th and again set down all three batters, then recorded the first out of the 11th before leaving the game. By the end of the night his postseason scoreless streak stood at 18 innings over nine appearances, and he had also collected three saves this playoff run, one of them in Game 2 of the World Series.[S1]

Regular-season form behind the run

The playoff dominance followed a strong regular season for Ashby, who went 13-3 with a 3.12 earned run average in 75 appearances for Milwaukee. Counting those regular-season outings, he has now put together a career-best 22 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings, a stretch that underlines how steady he was through the 2026 campaign.[S1]

Tampa Bay answers in the 12th

Ashby's historic outing was not enough to deliver a Milwaukee win. The Rays scored twice in the 12th inning to take Game 4, keeping their season alive and forcing a Game 5. Coverage of the finish described Tampa Bay's rally as a walk-off and a late comeback that stunned the Brewers.[S1][S3][S6][S7][S8]

Game 5 is set for Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET on Fox and Fox One, giving Milwaukee another chance to respond as the series goes on. The defeat was a setback for the Brewers, but Ashby's record-breaking night gave the matchup a historic highlight.[S1]
