ANMAT bans retatrutide products across Argentina
Argentina's National Administration of Drugs, Foods and Medical Devices (ANMAT) has prohibited the commercialization, distribution, publication and use of medicines containing retatrutide or retatrutida throughout the country. The measure was formalized through Disposition 6140/2026, published in the Official Gazette. The ban applies to all batches, sizes and presentations of any product for human administration that declares retatrutide as an ingredient, until ANMAT authorizes them. It covers both physical sales and electronic commerce platforms, with an exception for products used in clinical research expressly authorized by ANMAT.[S1][S2]
The investigation began after a complaint received by email at the Directorate of Evaluation and Management of Monitoring of Health Products, which reported two web links offering products claiming to contain retatrutide. ANMAT also noted that Brazil's National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) and Paraguay's National Health Surveillance Directorate (DINAVISA) had previously issued alerts about products containing retatrutide. The agency's Inspection Service for the Commercialization Chain recommended publishing an alert on its website, considering the products dangerous to health and available to the population.[S1][S2]
Substance still in clinical trials, risks cited
ANMAT stated that no medicinal specialties containing this substance are marketed in Argentina because it is an ingredient still in clinical research for its potential effects in patients with type II diabetes and inadequate glycemic control. The agency emphasized that the efficacy and safety of the drug have not yet been proven, making its use highly dangerous for health. It also noted that the purported manufacturers are unknown and that the products are offered for reconstitution and injection, requiring rigorous controls and professional oversight.[S1]
The products are promoted for weight control, regulation of caloric intake and improvement of metabolic function, and are said to modulate satiety, insulin sensitivity and energy expenditure. ANMAT's Disposition 6140/2026 states that the affected products lack registrations to prove their legitimate manufacture and oversight under applicable regulations. The measure also expands a complaint filed with Federal Criminal and Correctional Court No. 2 of Lomas de Zamora, originally lodged by ANMAT's Legal Affairs Directorate through the Division of Crimes against Health of the Argentine Federal Police.[S1][S2]
