Shooting inside a school bathroom
A 17-year-old student shot an 18-year-old classmate on Wednesday inside a bathroom at School No. 58, located at the intersection of Cayetano Donizetti and Esteban de Luca in Villa Dorrego, part of La Matanza in Buenos Aires province. Police sources said the victim was wounded in the abdomen and one arm. The alleged shooter was detained. Neither student's identity was released, and the reasons for the episode remain unknown.[S1][S2]
The attack was reported to authorities at about 1 p.m. A 911 call came in at 12:56, and a patrol car from the Sur 4th Police Station in Villa Dorrego reached the scene at 1:01 p.m. By then, the injured student had already been taken by teachers in a private vehicle to a hospital on Route 32, where he was undergoing surgery. The case is in the hands of prosecutor Marcelo Germinario of the Juvenile Criminal Responsibility Prosecutor's Office No. 2 in La Matanza.[S1][S2]
A .22-caliber pistol and an uncorroborated account
Investigators said the weapon used was a .22-caliber pistol. It was initially discarded and later found. Forensic experts worked in the bathroom to establish why and how the shooting happened. According to the police report seen by Clarín, the wounded youth spoke with nurses and said the person who shot him was a friend, and that the shots went off while the weapon was being shown to him. That version has not been confirmed, and authorities are still trying to reconstruct the circumstances and determine how the gun entered the school.[S1][S2]
The episode echoes a similar case in La Matanza last September at the Instituto Jesús María Plaza in Villa Dorrego. A teenager brought a loaded revolver in his backpack. He dropped the bag, a classmate accidentally kicked it, and the gun fired inside the classroom. Unlike Wednesday's shooting, no one was injured that time.[S1]
