Zverev clinches sixth title for Europe
Alexander Zverev secured Team Europe's sixth Laver Cup title by defeating Learner Tien 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 on the final day at London's O2 Arena. The US Open champion had lost to Team World's Alex de Minaur on day two but recovered to close out the match against the 20-year-old American in one hour and 49 minutes. Tien, making his Team World debut, held his nerve in the first set to force a tiebreak, but the world number two took control in the second set.[S1]
Earlier on the final day, Flavio Cobolli and Jakub Mensik beat De Minaur and Taylor Fritz in the doubles, extending Europe's lead. Both that win and Zverev's triumph took Europe's tally to the required 13 points, meaning Carlos Alcaraz was not needed to play again. Alcaraz had kept Europe in contention after the day-two loss.[S1]
Zverev reflects on team success
Zverev said he was happy to win a Laver Cup match after not having done so in two years. He gave credit to Team World for pushing Europe all the way, noting they were champions last year, and described the victory as a team effort built on great chemistry. He added that winning as a team is the best feeling in sports and that tennis does not offer enough of it.[S1]
Zverev has now been part of all six of Team Europe's Laver Cup wins and holds the record for most singles victories at the event with eight.[S1]
