Surprise Screening at New York Comic Con

Marvel unveiled the first episode of VisionQuest during a surprise screening that concluded its New York Comic Con panel on Thursday. The event took place at 5:45 pm ET, with the panel titled Up Next From Marvel Television and Marvel Animation, co-hosted by Brandon Davis and Marvel TV and animation chief Brad Winderbaum. The screening marked the public debut of the Disney+ series, which is scheduled to premiere on October 14.[S1]

The surprise premiere generated immediate buzz, with early reactions shared on social media as the panel ended. Attendees and journalists alike offered first impressions, ranging from con-goers who witnessed the episode to critics whose embargo lifted simultaneously with the panel's conclusion. The show is set to premiere on October 14, and the positive early feedback has heightened expectations for the series.[S1][S2][S3][S4][S5][S6][S7][S8]

Early Reactions Praise VisionQuest

Social media reactions to VisionQuest were largely positive, with many praising it as a worthy successor to WandaVision. Demet Koc of Nexus Point News wrote on X that the show is a worthy successor to WandaVision and feels like a love letter to Wanda Maximoff at times, tackling themes of love, grief, generational trauma, and identity. Koc also noted that the relationship between Tommy and Vision will leave viewers wanting more from this family, and called James Spader a delight and Emily Hampshire a surprisingly entertaining addition.[S1]

TJ Zwarych, writing for Agents of Fandom, said the on-screen rapport between Paul Bettany and James Spader was extraordinary, and he considered VisionQuest a fitting finale to the WandaVision trilogy. He acknowledged the middle section loses some momentum, yet praised it as an Easter egg-packed mystery with strong opening and closing chapters, singling out Emily Hampshire as an under-the-radar standout. Brandon Davis, a co-host of the NYCC panel, called VisionQuest an excellent follow-up to WandaVision, describing it as clever, strange, bold, and inventive, anchored by a heartfelt father-son bond. He said the series clearly enjoys its place in the MCU and reaches into as many of its corners as possible, making it deeply satisfying for dedicated fans.[S1]

Cast and Story Continuation

VisionQuest marks Paul Bettany's return to live-action MCU work for the first time since WandaVision, the first Marvel series to launch on Disney+, in which he appeared opposite Elizabeth Olsen's Wanda, also known as the Scarlet Witch. In that earlier show, Wanda seizes control of a New Jersey town and constructs an artificial sitcom-style reality where she and a magically conjured, memory-less Vision raise their twins, Tommy and Billy, in domestic bliss. After the deception collapses, the genuine Vision is brought back to life in a white suit with his memories intact. He departs, and Wanda appears to perish later after turning fully villainous in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.[S1]

In VisionQuest, Bettany's Vision is shown in both his android and human guises, joined by a roster of Marvel's other well-known artificial intelligences. James Spader reprises his role as Ultron, Emily Hampshire portrays E.D.I.T.H., Orla Brady plays F.R.I.D.A.Y., James D'Arcy appears as J.A.R.V.I.S., T'nia Miller takes on Jocasta, Lauren Morais is Lisa Molinari, and Ruaridh Mollica plays an older Tommy Maximoff. The show is scheduled to launch on Disney+ on October 14.[S1]

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING
  • #VisionQuest is a fantastic sequel to WandaVision. It’s smart, weird, ambitious, and creative with a beating father/son heart. My favorite part; it seems to love being a part of the MCU and embracing as many corners as it can. As a longtime fan, it’s very rewarding. Loved it.
