Sanctions on the court itself
The administration of US President Donald Trump has drawn up sanctions targeting the International Criminal Court in its entirety and plans to make them public shortly, according to two sources with knowledge of the matter. Such a step would intensify Washington's confrontation with the global tribunal, which handles prosecutions for war crimes and genocide around the world. Until now, the United States had held back from penalizing the court as a whole, even though officials had long weighed that option.[S1]
The Trump administration has openly expressed contempt for the court and has sought to weaken it. American officials want the ICC to set aside arrest warrants issued against Israeli leaders and to drop a previous investigation into US troops in Afghanistan. In July, Secretary of State Marco Rubio unveiled a campaign aimed at isolating the tribunal and called on other nations to withdraw from it. Washington has already sanctioned several ICC judges and prosecutors. The State Department did not immediately reply to a request for comment.[S1]
