Champion's Injury and Victory
UFC light heavyweight champion Carlos Ulberg has revealed his plan to step back into the Octagon in early 2027, after suffering a knee injury during his title bout at UFC 327. Ulberg, with a 15-1 record, tore the ACL in his right knee while defeating Jiří Procházka in early April. The injury happened when his knee gave way as he retreated and slipped on the mat during an exchange.[S1]
Even with the injury occurring in the opening round, Ulberg captured the 205-pound belt with his sixth career knockout. He delivered a left hook that sent Procházka to the canvas, then sealed the win with additional ground strikes. This finish stood out as one of the year's most impressive, as Ulberg seemed hurt but bounced back swiftly to secure the victory.[S1][S2]
Surgery and Recovery
One week post-injury, Ulberg had reconstructive surgery to address a full ligament tear. Such procedures generally require a nine-to-12-month recovery period with intensive rehab. Ulberg called the injury a 'full rupture' and is now four months into his rehabilitation, finding it tough to stay idle while watching other athletes compete.[S1][S2]
Speaking at the UFC Fight Night event in Shanghai, Ulberg expressed his frustration at being sidelined, saying he would prefer to be training with his teammates. He emphasized his commitment to doing everything necessary to return as champion, stating that he expects to come back stronger mentally and physically.[S2]
Return Plans
Ulberg's priority is regaining full fitness to defend his title early next year. Speaking to reporters before the Shanghai card, he said the rehab has been tough but he is driven daily by the goal of returning to the octagon in peak form. He is determined not to rush his comeback, respecting the standard recovery timeline.[S1][S2]
