Deadly Strike on Nizhnekamsk
A Ukrainian drone attack on the Russian city of Nizhnekamsk killed 12 people and wounded 39 others, authorities in the Tatarstan region said. The strike, described as "massive," targeted industrial and civilian facilities on Monday morning, according to the press service of Tatarstan's head, Rustam Minnikhanov. The city, roughly 1,200 kilometers east of the Ukrainian border, is an important oil refining hub with two refineries and a petrochemical plant. Tatarstan head Rustam Minnikhanov declared a period of mourning, said Radmir Belyayev, the city's mayor.[S1][S2]
Ukraine has targeted Russian oil facilities with long-range drones almost daily in recent months, causing fuel shortages and reducing refining capacity. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says the campaign aims to force Russian President Vladimir Putin to the negotiating table and stop the more than four-year invasion. "We do deliver entirely justified responses, and every Russian strike will be met with our response. Regional and Frontline Impacts
The Tatarstan region is rich in energy resources and has many major oil refineries that Kyiv has been targeting. Tatneft's TANECO refinery, hit by Ukraine in early June, processed 17 million tonnes of crude oil in 2024, producing 2.7 million tonnes of gasoline and 8.5 million tonnes of diesel fuel. Unverified footage on social media showed a large black smoke cloud at an oil facility near Nizhnekamsk. Russia's defence ministry said it shot down 456 Ukrainian drones fired overnight, without stating how many reached their targets.[S2]
Near the front line in Ukraine, a Russian artillery strike killed five people in the village of Bugaivka in the northeastern Kharkiv region, local officials said. The regional prosecutor's office reported the attack on August 10, saying various houses were destroyed. A woman was also killed in a Ukrainian attack on the Russian border region of Belgorod, and a man was killed in a Russian drone strike on a taxi in the frontline Kherson region. The World Health Organization's European office said one of its warehouses in the Dnipro region was struck twice in less than 24 hours, destroying emergency supplies worth an estimated $500,000.[S2][S1]
