Tornadoes Hit Marsala
On Friday, the western Sicilian coastal community of Marsala was hit by a pair of tornadoes. Dozens of residents suffered injuries, structures such as a school sustained damage, and vehicles were flipped over. Footage shared that morning depicted two waterspouts moving toward the town from the sea while locals prepared for their impact.[S1][S2][S3]
Flying debris and broken glass left no fewer than 11 individuals requiring hospital treatment. A 70-year-old man was among those hurt most severely; he was brought to Mazara del Vallo hospital in critical condition, suffering multiple fractures.[S1]
The strong winds also struck a school, causing six children to suffer minor cuts and scrapes. When the tornado arrived, 273 students were present in the building, and every one of them was evacuated without harm. Aerial video of the scene showed the school had been badly damaged, with broken windows and toppled desks and chairs.[S1]
Climate Context
Over the past few years, residents of southern Italy have been preparing for a medicane — an uncommon Mediterranean storm that resembles a hurricane, with the capacity to generate winds above 60 miles per hour and waves up to five metres tall. This particular system formed as a result of extreme heat over north Africa and exceptionally warm waters in the Mediterranean.[S1]
Researchers caution that warmer seas, a consequence of the climate crisis, may supply extra energy for intense storms in the area. Experts say record Mediterranean temperatures played a role in the unusual storm that caused the Bayesian, a super yacht, to sink off Sicily in August 2024, resulting in seven deaths, among them tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his teenage daughter.[S1]
