A Milestone Edition Opens in Toronto
The 51st Toronto Film Festival is marking a significant milestone, with events running from Thursday, September 10 through September 20. Organizers have assembled a program of 293 feature films, 45 shorts and 32 premieres. The opening night slot at Roy Thomson Hall went to Siân Heder's drama Being Heumann, in which Ruth Madeley portrays disability rights activist Judith Heumann.[S1]
Premieres held on the first day included the musical horror Stuffed, featuring Jodie Comer and Harry Melling, and the Rebeca Huntt documentary Rapinoe, centered on soccer star Megan Rapinoe. The Rapinoe premiere took place at TIFF Lightbox, while Stuffed screened at the Royal Alexandra Theatre.[S1]

The Gala Presentations section carries several high-profile world premieres: Anton Corbijn's A Talent for Murder, John Madden's Onwards and Sideways, Chris Rock's Misty Green, Hur Jin-ho's South Korean political thriller The Assassin(s) and Tim Blake Nelson's The Life and Deaths of Wilson Shedd.[S1]
Late-night audiences have the 2026 Midnight Madness program, which opens with Joshua Giuliano's slasher River and closes with Duncan Jones' comic-book adaptation Rogue Trooper. The section also includes the world premiere of Anna Biller's medieval ghost story The Face of Horror, her long-awaited follow-up to The Love Witch, and Paolo Strippoli's psychological thriller The Spiral.[S1]
Closing Night, Market Launch and Awards
The festival wraps up with a sports drama from Canadian filmmaker Yan Lanouette Turgeon titled Villeneuve: The Rise of a Legend, which chronicles the formative period of Gilles Villeneuve, the celebrated Canadian racer. Among the Gala and Special Presentations are titles making their world or North American debuts, including work by Diego Luna (Ashes), Valeska Grisebach (The Dreamed Adventure) and Anthony Chen (We Are All Strangers).[S1]
A new piece of the festival arrives this year: TIFF: The Market debuts at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, bringing industry programming together with added venues like the John Bassett Theatre. The previously announced TIFF Tribute Awards keep recognizing notable international filmmakers, performers and rising talents over opening weekend. Audience balloting decides several prizes during the event, above all the People's Choice Awards, which frequently signal later Oscar recognition.[S1]
