A frightening scene under the basket
Oklahoma City Thunder guard Jalen Williams was carried off the court on a stretcher Sunday night after sustaining what appeared to be a serious injury to his lower left leg. The injury occurred as he was fouled on a drive with 1 minute 14 seconds left in Oklahoma City's matchup with the Los Angeles Clippers, and medical staff reached him almost at once after he fell beneath the basket at the Thunder's offensive end.[S1]
Towels covered Williams' ankle while players from both sides reacted with immediate alarm as the stretcher arrived. Play halted for roughly five minutes, and Oklahoma City went on to close out a 108-101 victory. The Thunder issued no immediate diagnosis, but the severity of the injury was plain, and the stretcher was summoned within seconds of the play ending.[S1][S2]
Teammates and coach react
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander struggled to hold back tears while discussing Williams in a postgame televised interview, saying he simply felt bad for his teammate and had nothing to add. Oklahoma City coach Mark Daigneault said the club was not doing well and that the team would receive the latest information on Williams' condition at a Monday morning briefing.[S1]
Gilgeous-Sanders also described Williams as someone who relishes playing and competing, calling his recent run of bad luck unfortunate but saying Williams is equipped to handle it. The coach acknowledged that the schedule offers Oklahoma City little room to pause, with a home game against Phoenix set for Monday.[S1][S2]
A key piece of a champion roster
Williams, a shooting guard, came into Sunday averaging 18 points per game across his first 250 NBA appearances. He has already earned All-Star and All-NBA recognition and played a major role in the Thunder squad that captured the 2025 NBA title. Last season he sat out 49 games because of a range of leg problems, mainly involving his hamstring, along with recovery from major surgery on his right wrist.[S1][S2]
Gilgeous-Alexander said the team has no alternative but to keep going, framing it as part of what players sign up for, and acknowledged how difficult it will be to compete without a player of Williams' caliber. He added that Williams is not lost permanently and expressed confidence that his teammate will return in stronger form, saying the group must keep things steady until then.[S1][S2]
