Müller breaks the deadlock after a tense first half
Portland Thorns booked their spot in the 2026 NWSL Playoffs by edging North Carolina Courage 1-0 on Friday night at Providence Park. Both teams entered with plenty at stake: Portland needed only a victory to qualify, while North Carolina were chasing a return to playoff position. The Courage nearly struck first in the sixth minute when forward Ashley Sanchez lifted the ball past the Thorns goalkeeper, but the effort was disallowed for offside and the score stayed level.[S1][S2][S4]
Portland forward Reilyn Turner produced several promising moments inside the opening 20 minutes, keeping the Courage back line under pressure as the hosts searched for the first goal. North Carolina came close shortly before halftime when defender Ryan Williams struck from distance and the ball came back off the crossbar; it rebounded clear of the Portland goal and was cleared, so the teams went in level.[S1]
The second half began with both sides pushing for the opening goal, and it was Portland who found it in the 60th minute. A deflected shot fell to defender Marie Müller, who struck from roughly 20 yards and beat the North Carolina goalkeeper. The visitors pressed for an equalizer through the remaining half hour, but the Thorns held firm to claim their postseason ticket.[S1][S4]
Possession favored the Courage, but Portland's finishing decided it
The match statistics show North Carolina controlling the ball for 63 percent of the game against Portland's 37 percent, and the Courage also led in tackles, with 18 to the Thorns' 11, and in tackles won, 14 to seven. Portland, however, made more of its chances: the Thorns recorded 13 shots to North Carolina's 11 and put seven on target compared with two for the visitors, forcing five saves from the Courage goalkeeper while Mackenzie Arnold made two.[S1]
Discipline added to the tension. Müller was booked in the 27th minute, Bia Gomes of North Carolina received a yellow card in the 55th and Courage midfielder Riley Jackson was cautioned in the 79th. The officiating crew was led by referee Matt Thompson, with Nicholas Seymour and Emmanuel Padilla as assistants, Justin St. Pierre as fourth official, and Jaclyn Metz and Melissa Beck handling VAR duties.[S1]
A crowd of 20,105 attended the Friday fixture at Providence Park. Portland's starting lineup in a 4-4-2 included Arnold in goal behind Reyna Reyes, Jayden Perry, Isabella Obaze and Carolyn Calzada, with Caiya Hanks, Jessie Fleming, Nina Nijstad and Müller across midfield and Pietra Tordin partnering Turner up front. M.A. Vignola replaced Obaze in the 61st minute.[S1]
A tenth straight berth, and three clubs pulled along
The result carried wider consequences for the playoff picture. Reports describe the victory as Portland's tenth consecutive postseason qualification, and the outcome is also said to have confirmed playoff places for Angel City, KC Current and Utah Royals. For Utah in particular, the berth is described as the club's first in the NWSL.[S3][S6][S7]
Portland closes the regular season on the road at NWSL Decision Day, meeting Houston Dash on Sunday, November 1 at Shell Energy Stadium. Kickoff is set for 2 pm PT, with broadcast details to be announced by the league in the coming days.[S1]
