The speculation began after the official social media account of the Sydney Marathon unveiled the design for the 2026 medal, inviting followers to examine the details closely. The post described a beautiful Sydney skyline with landmarks like the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House, but the stadium depicted has a façade with diamond-shaped cushions, characteristic of Munich's arena, unlike Sydney's stadium with its bronze fins.[S1]
Artist's Role and Previous Incidents
The reverse side of this two-sided medal showcases a gold and indigo design by First Nations artist Ambrose Killian, who confirmed to the BBC that he did not create the other side's artwork. Killian's design includes 42 half-circle marks along the rim, each symbolizing a kilometer of the marathon route, according to organizers.[S1]
This mistake comes after a comparable error at the Great North Run in Newcastle last year, where medals incorrectly displayed the Sunderland and Wear River, not part of the race.
