Flash Estimate Shows Slight Acceleration

Statistics Sweden reported on September 7, 2026, that its preliminary Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation rate for August stood at 0.3 percent, a modest increase from the 0.2 percent recorded in July. The month-on-month change in the CPI between July and August was -0.3 percent. These figures come from the flash estimate, a rapid preliminary release published five working days before the official statistics.[S1]

The CPIF, which holds mortgage rates constant and serves as the Riksbank's target variable, remained unchanged at 0.7 percent in August compared with the previous month. Meanwhile, the CPIF excluding energy (CPIF-XE) declined to 0.5 percent from 0.6 percent in July, according to the preliminary data.[S1]

What the Measures Mean

Statistics Sweden calculates several inflation gauges for different purposes. While the CPI is the most common measure of inflation in Sweden, the CPIF is the one the Riksbank targets for monetary policy. The CPIF includes the same basket of goods and services as the CPI, but it keeps household mortgage interest rates fixed, so the effect of rate changes is captured only in the CPI.[S1]

The flash CPI provides only total-level data for the CPI, CPIF, and CPIF-XE, along with change rates for divisions and special aggregates. More detailed and definitive figures are scheduled for release on September 14. The agency also noted that its PxWebApi v1 will be replaced by v2, with the old version functioning only until the turn of the year 2026/2027.[S1]
