A Record-Breaking Victory
Austin Smotherman secured his first PGA Tour title on Sunday at the Bank of Utah Championship, carding a 3-under 68 to finish at 26-under 258. The 32-year-old led wire-to-wire at Black Desert Resort in Ivins, Utah, breaking the 72-hole tournament record in just its third year. Starting the week at No. 79 in the FedEx Cup standings, Smotherman earned a two-year exemption that includes the Championship Series when the new competitive model begins in 2028.[S1]
Smotherman built an early three-shot lead with tap-in birdies and a 35-foot birdie on the par-4 fifth. However, a double bogey on the 13th, where his approach plugged near a bunker lip, cut his advantage to one shot over Trace Crowe, who eagled the 14th from 40 feet. Smotherman responded with precise tee shots on the 14th and 15th, though he missed short birdie putts, before converting a 12-foot birdie on the 16th to regain a comfortable lead.[S1]
Chasing Pack and Canadian Contingent
Doug Ghim, also seeking his maiden PGA Tour win, struggled with a three-putt on the 13th and a missed par putt on the 15th, finishing second alone after a final-round 69. He moved from 89th to 58th in the FedEx Cup standings. Trace Crowe (66) and David Ford (64) tied for third. Among the top 12, Kevin Streelman and Steven Fist were the only previous PGA Tour winners, with Streelman tying for fifth alongside Ben James.[S1]
A.J. Ewart of Coquitlam, B.C., was the leading Canadian, shooting a 69 to finish eight shots behind Smotherman. Sudarshan Yellamaraju of Mississauga, Ont., posted a 72 and was six shots back of Ewart. Nick Taylor (70) of Abbotsford, B.C., and Adam Svensson (68) of Surrey, B.C., finished seven and eight shots behind Ewart, respectively.[S2]
