Animated and Horror Hits Arrive
Disney and Pixar's Toy Story 5, which has grossed $1.13 billion worldwide, making it the third highest-grossing film of 2026, will debut on Disney+ on September 23. The sequel, praised by Variety as one of the year's best, is expected to boost the entire franchise's streaming numbers. A24's horror hit Backrooms, which became the studio's highest-grossing title ever with $394 million, lands on HBO Max on September 25.[S1]
Backrooms, directed by Kane Parsons, received a positive review from Variety's chief film critic Owen Gleiberman, who called it extraordinarily effective and praised Chiwetel Ejiofor's central performance. Gleiberman also compared Parsons' atmospheric style and cosmic sound design to the work of the late David Lynch.[S1]
Star Wars and Comedy Sequels Seek Streaming Success
The Mandalorian and Grogu, which underperformed at the box office with $345 million worldwide, is now available on Disney+. Directed by Jon Favreau, the film follows Din Djarin and Grogu as they are recruited by Colonel Ward to rescue Rotta the Hutt, voiced by Jeremy Allen White. The movie hopes to find a larger audience on streaming.[S1]
Scary Movie 6, also known as Scary Movie, is streaming on Paramount+ after earning $231 million globally. An extended cut is also available. The film brings back Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Anna Faris, and Regina Hall, with Faris and Hall returning after missing the previous installment.[S1]
Superheroes and Dramas Debut
Supergirl arrives on HBO Max on September 10, with an American Sign Language version performed by Catalene Sacchetti and directed by Jonaz McMillan. Directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, the film adapts the DC comic Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, following Supergirl and a young alien girl hunting Krem of the Yellow Hill.[S1]
Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married Again? premieres on Netflix on September 9, reuniting the original cast as Marcus and Angela's daughter prepares to marry. The film explores how the couples confront their past and question their own marriages. Additionally, Unabomber, starring Jacob Tremblay as Ted Kaczynski, debuts on Netflix on September 25, depicting his transformation from a Harvard prodigy to the infamous bomber.[S1]
