A secret part in Marvel's next ensemble
Sandra Hüller, who was nominated for an Academy Award for her work in Anatomy of a Fall, has been given a cameo in Marvel's Avengers: Doomsday. The Hollywood Reporter was first to report her involvement. Marvel Studios does not discuss casting decisions, and the nature of her part has not been disclosed.[S1][S2][S3][S4][S5][S6][S7][S8]
Directors Anthony and Joe Russo are in post-production on the movie, which is set to open on Dec. 18. The cast already includes Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Paul Rudd, Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh, Vanessa Kirby, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Tom Hiddleston and Channing Tatum, along with further performers drawn from the Black Panther, Thunderbolts, Fantastic Four and X-Men films.[S1]
Speculation surrounds the mystery role
Little about the story of Avengers: Doomsday has been made public beyond the premise that Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom is the gravest threat the heroes have faced. Downey is returning to the franchise in that villainous part rather than as Iron Man, and Chris Evans is also coming back as Steve Rogers.[S1]
Talk of Hüller's participation started circulating a few weeks ago. Some fans have guessed that her character could be connected to Downey's Doom, possibly as his mother, while others have suggested she might be one of the Latverian Witches, the figures in colorful robes that Marvel presented at this year's Comic-Con.[S1]
A busy awards season for the German star
The Marvel appearance would be Hüller's fifth major film of 2026, after Project Hail Mary, Rose, Fatherland and Digger. All four are expected to figure in the coming awards race, and Project Hail Mary pairs her with Ryan Gosling, recently announced as Marvel's Ghost Rider.[S1]
Hüller earned her first Oscar nomination for best actress in 2024, thanks to Anatomy of a Fall, which was one of two best picture nominees she starred in that year. The second, The Zone of Interest, won two Academy Awards, including best international feature, while Anatomy of a Fall was honored with best original screenplay.[S1]
