Transfer confirmed
Rangers have confirmed the signing of South Africa defender Olwethu Makhanya from Philadelphia Union for a fee in the region of £3 million. The 22-year-old centre-back has signed a four-year contract with the option of a further 12 months, becoming the club's eighth summer signing.[S1][S2][S5]
Makhanya expressed his delight at joining the club, calling it a 'big honour' and a 'huge blessing'. He stated that playing in Europe has always been a dream since childhood, and the move to Rangers is a 'dream come true'.[S1][S2]
Manager's view and background
Rangers manager Derek McInnes described Makhanya as a 'strong, physical and confident defender' who can make a real impact. McInnes noted that despite his youth, Makhanya has gained experience in different environments and has the attributes to thrive in Scottish football.[S2][S3]
Makhanya has one senior cap for South Africa and was part of their World Cup squad, though he did not play. However, his disciplinary record has raised some concerns: according to reports, he accumulated 14 yellow cards and four red cards in the past two seasons in MLS.[S1][S4]
