On Friday night, Pearl Jam turned up without warning at Ohana Festival, joining the bill while Eddie Vedder was headlining in Dana Point, California. The set was advertised as "Eddie Vedder and Friends," and the seaside audience was caught off guard when the group played alongside Abe Laboriel Jr., a drummer long associated with Paul McCartney. Pearl Jam kicked things off with Corduroy, then worked through crowd-pleasers such as Hail Hail, Scared of Fear, and Wishlist. Pearl Jam's drummer position has been vacant since Matt Cameron left the band amicably in July 2025. The group had previously confirmed that it selected a new member but kept the decision private. It remains uncertain whether Laboriel has officially joined Pearl Jam, and the band has not issued any formal statement about his status. Earlier in the week, Rolling Stone included Laboriel among its leading candidates for the role, citing his formidable abilities, his friendship with Vedder, and his guest appearance on Vedder's 2022 solo album, Earthling.[S1]

Besides drumming, Laboriel sings backing vocals, and he has played massive events, including Super Bowl halftime productions and concerts before Queen Elizabeth. Speculation about his situation grew in May when he did not appear with McCartney on Saturday Night Live's 51st finale, with Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers taking his place. It remains unconfirmed whether Laboriel has left McCartney's band or might split his time between McCartney and Pearl Jam.
