Netflix Orders Second Season of 'A Different World' Reboot
Netflix has renewed its reboot of 'A Different World' for a second season. The revival of the 1987-1993 NBC sitcom follows a new generation of students at the historically Black Hillman College. The series centers on Deborah, portrayed by Maleah Joi Moon, who is the youngest child of Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert.[S1]
The logline for Season 2 describes Deborah and her Hillman classmates returning to campus for their sophomore year with a 'New Year, New Me' mindset. They will confront past decisions, uncertain futures, new romantic interests and friendships, and deeper questions about their purpose, all while finding themselves in a great deal of new trouble.[S1]
Cast and Creative Team Return for Sophomore Year
The cast also includes Alijah Kai, Cornell Young IV, Jordan Aaron Hall, Kennedi Reece and Chibuikem Uche, appearing with Moon. Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison came back to play Dwayne and Whitley, the parts they originated, and other familiar faces returned as well, among them Darryl M. Bell, Cree Summer, Ajai Sanders and Jada Pinkett Smith. Felicia Pride holds the titles of creator, showrunner, executive producer and writer. Debbie Allen, who directed 83 episodes of the earlier show, came aboard again as director and executive producer.[S1]
Pride described the renewal as validating and expressed excitement about returning to Hillman to tell meaningful, heartfelt stories that resonate across generations. She also praised the cast and crew. Allen celebrated the news, saying that the audience and Netflix had spoken and that the show brought joy, romance, relevance, authenticity and heart. She thanked viewers for propelling the series into the global Top 10 and promised a strong return for Season 2.[S1]
Critical Acclaim and Global Reach
Season 1 of the reboot received critical acclaim. Variety's Aramide Tinubu wrote that the new series is timely and fresh, distinguishing itself from the original while honoring everything that made its predecessor iconic.[S1]
