Sweet Magnolias Canceled After Five Seasons

Netflix has decided to end its romantic drama Sweet Magnolias after five seasons. The show, which starred JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Brooke Elliott, and Heather Headley, will not return for a sixth season. The cancellation marks the conclusion of a series that had built a dedicated following over its run.[S1]

New Series Ladies of the House Ordered

Netflix has also greenlit a separate drama called Ladies of the House. Sheryl J. Anderson, who created Sweet Magnolias, is on board as showrunner. JoAnna Garcia Swisher may take a lead role and would executive produce alongside Kate Gordon through their Rolling Clover company, joined by executive producers from Black Label Media. The series draws loosely on Lauren Edmonson's novel.[S1]

According to the show's logline, the tale centers on a winery whose magnetic owner passes away suddenly, forcing his spouse and their two grown daughters to work through their own tensions as they deal with difficulties involving the company, the wider family, and the men in their lives. The description notes that loyal friends and fine wine help them keep the winery, yet holding on to one another is what counts most.[S1]

Creative Team's Enthusiasm for the Project

Sheryl J. Anderson expressed her excitement about the new venture with JoAnna Garcia Swisher and Netflix. She recalled that when Swisher shared the novel with her, she immediately saw the potential for a series centered on three women dealing with family, friendship, and romance. Anderson said she cannot wait to introduce the Richardson women and their world to Netflix's global audience.[S1]

JoAnna Garcia Swisher also shared her enthusiasm, stating that from the moment she read Lauren Edmondson's Ladies of the House, she fell in love with the characters Daisy, Cricket, and Wallis, appreciating their relationships, messiness, strength, and heart. She said she is excited to continue telling meaningful, female-driven stories with Anderson and to bring the project to life through Rolling Clover and with partners at Black Label. Swisher noted that Netflix has been her creative home for the past seven years and she could not imagine a better place or team to tell this story.[S1]
