Michigan's Second Straight Loss
On Saturday, Michigan dropped a 20-14 decision to Minnesota, marking a second straight setback for the Wolverines under first-year head coach Kyle Whittingham. Minnesota's P.J. Fleck savored his program's first home victory against its Big Ten opponent since 1977. The mounting losses have intensified questions surrounding Michigan's football program.[S1][S2][S3][S4][S5][S6]
Bryce Underwood, who was the top-rated prospect in the 2025 recruiting class, went 10-of-21 through the air for 101 yards, tossing two interceptions and zero touchdowns. His 47.6 completion rate, 101 passing yards, and 4.8 yards per attempt all represented season-worst marks. During his true freshman campaign a year ago, Underwood amassed 2,423 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. His difficulties have contributed heavily to Michigan's offensive problems.[S1]
Whittingham's Contract and Coaching Pressure
Kyle Whittingham left Utah after 22 seasons to become Michigan's head coach, signing a five-year, $41 million contract in December. According to Tony Garcia of the Detroit Free Press, if Whittingham were fired without cause, he would be owed 75 percent of the remaining money on his deal. Whittingham's tenure at Utah included a 13-0 season in 2008 and eight seasons with at least 10 wins. The Utes had only three 10-win seasons from 1905 to 2004.[S1]
Whittingham has suggested difficult choices lie ahead for the Michigan offense, and some analysts have called for Underwood to be benched. Although 17 players arrived via the transfer portal this season, the results have been minimal. Whittingham inherited a roster largely assembled by Sherrone Moore's staff. In four of the first five games, the offense has scored fewer than 20 points, the lone exception being a UTEP defense that ranked fifth-worst nationally in points allowed per game.[S1][S2][S3][S4]
What's Next for the Wolverines
Tommy Carr, a true freshman, serves as Michigan's backup quarterback. Rated a 4-star recruit and the No. 22 quarterback in the 2026 class by 247Sports' composite rankings, Carr is inexperienced but might provide a jolt. With the offense sputtering across five games, trying a different quarterback could be worthwhile. Michigan has a bye next week before facing Penn State and Indiana in consecutive weeks.[S1]
