A landmark performance gets the documentary treatment
Michael Jackson's celebrated 1993 Super Bowl halftime show will be the focus of a new documentary arriving on Hulu and ESPN. The film, titled Spectacle: Michael Jackson at the Super Bowl, is scheduled to debut in February 2027. It will follow the King of Pop as he prepared for his performance at the Rose Bowl, drawing on never-before-seen footage of Jackson and his team to show how he elevated the Super Bowl halftime show into the biggest spectacle in pop culture.[S1][S2][S3][S4][S5][S6][S7][S8]
Jackson's set is widely credited with changing the nature of the halftime slot. Before his appearance, the segment was typically led by marching bands and artists past their commercial peak. After Jackson, the stage hosted blockbuster acts including U2, Prince, Bruce Springsteen, Beyoncé and Bad Bunny. His own performance combined precise choreography and costumes with an emotional throughline, featuring songs such as Jam, Billie Jean, Black or White, We Are the World and Heal the World.[S1]
The team behind the film
Bao Nguyen directs and produces the documentary. Nguyen previously directed The Greatest Night in Pop, a documentary about We Are the World. Spectacle: Michael Jackson at the Super Bowl is produced by Jesse Sisgold, Jon Weinbach and Lauren Gaffney for Skydance Sports; John Branca for Optimum Productions; and Amit Dey for Into the Deep End Films. Karen Langford serves as executive producer for Optimum, while Ross Ketover, Ken Rodgers, Keith Cossrow and Jessica Boddy are executive producers for NFL Films.[S1]
The project arrives nearly a year after Lionsgate released the hit biopic Michael, starring Jackson's nephew Jaafar Jackson. A sequel to that film is in development.[S1]
