A qualifying score short of the final
Rhys McClenaghan, the reigning Olympic champion on pommel horse, will not appear in the apparatus final at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Rotterdam. During qualification the 27-year-old registered 14.400 points, a total that left him in 10th position and outside the places needed to advance, according to BBC Sport.[S1][S2]
The outcome ends his involvement in the Dutch event at the qualifying stage. The Northern Irish gymnast had arrived as one of the headline names in the discipline, but the score he produced was not enough to keep his campaign going into the medal rounds.[S1][S2]
A comeback slowed by shoulder surgery
McClenaghan's appearance in the Netherlands follows a long absence. He sat out the whole of 2025 while he recovered from an operation on his shoulder, and his path back to competition has been gradual rather than smooth.[S1][S2]
His first major outing after the injury came in July, when he placed sixth at the Commonwealth Games. A month later, at the European Championships in Zagreb, he finished seventh. Those results, and now the Rotterdam qualification, suggest the gymnast is still working his way back toward the level that made him a world and Olympic champion.[S1][S2]
A record that sets the standard he is chasing
Before the injury, McClenaghan had established himself among the leading pommel horse specialists of his generation. He owns two world championship titles and has taken gold at the European Championships on three occasions, alongside his Olympic crown.[S1][S2]
That history explains why his absence from the Rotterdam final stands out. The gymnast's current form is measured against a career in which he has repeatedly reached the decisive stage of major competitions, and the qualifying round in the Netherlands did not extend that pattern.[S1][S2]
