A career built across Argentina's biggest stations
Marcela Giorgi died on Saturday at the age of 61, according to announcements made by her own station. She had been away from the microphone in recent months while dealing with a serious health problem. Her career in Argentine broadcasting stretched back more than thirty years and took her through some of the country's most listened-to outlets.[S1][S2][S4]
She started working in radio before she had even graduated from the Instituto Superior de Enseñanza Radiofónica, the country's training school for broadcasters. Her earliest jobs were at a low-power FM station, and from there she moved to La 100 and then to Radio Mitre, where she spent much of her professional life.[S1][S2][S3]
Over the years she shared studios with some of the most established names in Argentine journalism, among them Magdalena Ruiz Guiñazú, Chiche Gelblung, Santo Biasatti and Alfredo Leuco. Colleagues and listeners remembered her for a warm on-air manner, an ability to handle very different kinds of material, and a clear enthusiasm for the medium.[S1][S2][S3]
Two Martín Fierro awards and a decade beside Leuco
One of the high points of her career was De 7 a 9, música y noticias, a program she fronted alongside Mario Portugal on FM La 100. The show collected two Martín Fierro prizes. Later she returned to Radio Mitre to work with Alfredo Leuco on Le doy mi palabra, a role in which she handled news reading, general information, entertainment and sports commentary.[S1][S2][S3]
In a 2015 interview with Diario Popular she said she valued the room that program gave her to mix information, humor and commentary on current affairs. She described her own role in the team by comparing herself to two well-known figures from Argentine football, saying she filled in wherever the program needed her, including on sports.[S1][S2][S5]
Leuco paid tribute to her in June 2015 on his personal website after she collected a Martín Fierro, calling her the soul of the radio and praising her professionalism, her sensitivity and her knack for adjusting to whatever a program required at a given moment.[S1]
The announcement on air and tributes from colleagues
Radio Mitre broke the news during its Saturday broadcast. Mariel Di Lenarda, a journalist and friend of Giorgi, confirmed the death on air, and the station later posted a black ribbon and a message saying Giorgi had been part of its history and left a mark on it. Adriana Verón, speaking on the same broadcast, said the station had held back information about Giorgi's health out of respect for her and her family while she was going through a difficult period.[S1][S4][S5]
Di Lenarda said Giorgi's brothers had given permission for the news to be made public, because so many listeners had been asking about her. She also wrote on Instagram that she was heartbroken and loved her friend. Leuco published a message describing more than a decade of shared microphone time and calling Giorgi an outstanding professional and an extraordinary woman. Julio Lagos also expressed his shock at learning of the death.[S2][S4]
No official information has been released about the specific illness or cause of death. Listeners had grown worried in recent days because Giorgi was absent from the programs she usually took part in, and although it was known that her health was delicate, no details of her diagnosis had circulated.[S4][S5]
Recent work and a 2026 award nomination
In her final years Giorgi remained with Radio Mitre as a member of Sábado Tempranísimo, sharing the air with Marcelo Bonelli, Daniel Mollo and other members of the team. Bonelli, visibly moved, said on air that he was devastated by a piece of news nobody wanted to hear, and that although everyone had feared it might come, no one is ever ready for it.[S1][S2][S4]
Her work on that program earned her a nomination at the 2026 Martín Fierro de Radio awards in the female announcing category, alongside Alejandra Salas and Gigi Ribaloff. She was a supporter of the football club Independiente, and music and football were among the subjects she most enjoyed bringing into her broadcasts.[S2][S3]
