First Look at Day Drinker
Lionsgate has debuted the first trailer for Day Drinker, a supernatural revenge thriller that represents one of Johnny Depp's first starring roles in a studio film in years. The movie is scheduled to hit theaters on March 26, 2027. Directed by Marc Webb, the film also stars Madelyn Cline and Penélope Cruz. The plot centers on a private-yacht bartender, played by Cline, who meets a mysterious guest on board, portrayed by Depp. The two soon become involved with a criminal figure, played by Cruz, and discover connections that no one anticipated.[S1]
In the trailer, Depp appears with gray hair, a scraggly beard, eerie eyes and a thick accent. He is shown being thrown to the ground and arrested. His look has been compared to the unstoppable force Max Cady, most recently played by Javier Bardem in Apple's Cape Fear. Depp's character warns that he has made a living out of misbehavior and sees no tangible reason to stop now. Later, he shares that his story might be a tale of revenge, or perhaps something worse, and wonders if it is all a ghost story or if he is just another day drinker.[S1]
The preview shows fights involving firearms and an axe, hints that Cruz's character may possess otherworldly abilities, and includes scenes set on the water. It also reveals the event that sets Depp's character on his path of vengeance: a woman's body sinking beneath the waves. Marc Webb directed the movie, working from Zach Dean's screenplay. The producer roster includes Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, Adam Kolbrenner, Dean and Nathan Kahane, while Dan Friedkin, Micah Green, Daniel Steinman, Stephen Deuters, Jason Forman, Sam Sarkar, Webb, Eric Sherman, Sarah Hong, Scott LaStaiti, Adrián Guerra and Xavier Parache serve as executive producers.[S1]
This project pairs Depp with Cruz for the fourth time, after Blow, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Murder on the Orient Express. It represents an early major trial for Depp as he steps back into leading studio parts for the first time since his U.S. defamation lawsuit against Amber Heard wrapped up in 2022. Arriving in theaters first is Ti West's Ebenezer for Paramount, scheduled for November 13; before this year, Depp's most recent studio release had been Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald in 2018.[S1]
