A slimmed-down studio emerges after the buyback
Hello Sunshine, the production company founded by Reese Witherspoon, has shed approximately 30 positions, a figure equal to about half of its employees. The reductions arrive only weeks after Witherspoon took the company back from Candle Media, the Blackstone-backed group that had held a controlling interest since 2021. Variety confirmed the layoffs through several people familiar with the situation.[S1][S2][S3]
With the French conglomerate Mediawan behind her, Witherspoon reportedly recovered the banner for a sum far below the $900 million Candle Media had spent to acquire it. A representative for Hello Sunshine declined to answer questions about the job losses.[S1]
Film, television and a book club take priority
Under the new setup, Hello Sunshine intends to put most of its energy into film and television production and into the Reese's Book Club brand. The direct-to-consumer side of the business is being hollowed out, according to the people who described the restructuring.[S1]
A pattern of cutbacks stretching back two years
Although Witherspoon and Mediawan have only just taken charge, Hello Sunshine has already been through repeated staff reductions. During Candle Media's ownership the company carried out no fewer than four rounds of job cuts in two years, hitting its unscripted unit and Sunnie, a lifestyle brand aimed at younger audiences.[S1]
Candle Media also closed Hello Sunshine's children's and animation division in 2023. The following year it folded live-action operations, Hello Sunshine's among them, into Candle Studios, which Sarah Harden, then Hello Sunshine's chief executive, ran until she left the post a year later.[S1]
Witherspoon frames the return as a homecoming
Announcing the reacquisition, Witherspoon said the best was still to come and described Mediawan as a worldwide independent studio that places creators at the centre, which she said had long been her aim for Hello Sunshine. She explained that she was putting money in alongside Mediawan and joining Pierre-Antoine Capton and his colleagues because she saw the company as the right base for the shifting media business.[S1]
She called the move a return home as well, crediting Peter Chernin and Jesse Jacobs with backing Hello Sunshine from the outset, expressing pride in what the team had achieved, and thanking Blackstone and Candle Media for their partnership and steady support.[S1]
