A Month Later: The Time Jump and the New VIP Floor

Grey's Anatomy opened Season 23 with its first time jump between seasons in four years, moving the story forward one month after the events of the Season 22 finale. The episode revealed the completed VIP floor, a luxury medical suite funded by Olympic Regent Health, the company of Seth Norton, a handsome and arrogant surgeon-turned-businessman played by new recurring cast member James Wolk. Norton's bottom-line mentality quickly came into conflict with Meredith's compassionate approach, and by the end of the hour he was revealed as Grey Sloan's new Chief of Surgery, the position Teddy previously held.[S1]

The premiere made no mention of Nick or his engagement to Meredith from the Season 22 finale, and offered no update on Teddy and Owen's new life in France. Executive producer and showrunner Meg Marinis said the engagement remains on, noting that Meredith has never been a ring wearer, even during her relationship with Derek, and that the story will be picked up again. She also confirmed Nick will appear this season despite scheduling challenges, since R.J. Decker, the other show starring Scott Speedman, was renewed for a second season and films in North Carolina while Grey's Anatomy shoots in California.[S1]

Simone's Pregnancy, Jo's Resignation, and Winston's New Role

When the previous season wrapped, Simone had to pick between Wes and Lucas: Wes wanted to turn their no-strings arrangement into something committed, while she had slept with Lucas after drinking too much. One month on, she is dating Wes and has changed her hair, yet encounters with Lucas — often shirtless, occasionally with no clothes at all — keep happening. The premiere delivered a big shock when Simone learned she was expecting a baby.[S1]

Bailey remains unaware that Winston is entangled with an intern named Jules, which leaves Winston room to confess on his own. Then the premiere's closing stretch brought a worse bind: wanting to hand off duties so she could start a master's program, Bailey named Winston residency director, putting him directly above Jules. Kwan, or Blue, is still out of a job and working for himself, though he quietly came back to Grey Sloan with Simone's assistance to rescue his French tutor online. Jo seemed recovered and on shift, but treating a coding patient stirred up distressing memories, and in the last moments she revealed to Link that she had resigned. Just before that, Link had used some of Jo's leftover painkillers, hinting his addiction struggles are worsening.[S1]

Amelia and Toni Reconcile as a New Antagonist Settles In

Amelia and Toni's ongoing tension, following Amelia's dalliance with Cass in the Season 22 finale, erupted into a public argument over a patient's care. The two ultimately reconciled and got back together. Marinis explained that James Wolk's character was introduced as a source of conflict for the entire hospital rather than solely as a figure in Meredith's life. She said he will be at the center of the friction between the new floor and the rest of the hospital, and that Richard in particular will react to working alongside someone who does not know the institution. Marinis noted that the show has never had a chief who was not already part of the hospital, making him a stranger to many and someone who may miss the interpersonal dynamics everyone else understands.[S1]

Marinis added that Meredith and Seth will keep sharing scenes going forward, whether or not romance is part of it, and framed Meredith as someone who takes on fights that other people are unable to speak up about. She also gave an update on the spinoff set in rural Texas that she is developing alongside Grey's Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes, noting it holds a straight-to-series pickup for midseason.[S1]

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING
  • Well, the engagement is still on. Meredith Grey has never really worn a ring, even when she was with Derek. So she's not necessarily a ring wearer, but that's not to say that once they get married they may have wedding bands. We'll pick up that story though, don't worry.
