Provisional Suspension Announced
The Athletics Integrity Unit announced on Friday that French hurdler Cyrena Samba-Mayela has been provisionally suspended for failing to notify anti-doping officials of her whereabouts. The 25-year-old, who won silver in the 100m hurdles at the 2024 Olympic Games, has been banned since September 18 and risks a two-year suspension. She had withdrawn from August's European Championships because of an injury.[S1]
Representative Denies Any Substance Use
A representative for Samba-Mayela told AFP that the athlete has never returned a positive result on any anti-doping test. The representative explained that the ongoing procedure before the AIU concerns only administrative whereabouts requirements and not the use of any substance. Samba-Mayela continues to respond within the allotted timeframes and to cooperate fully, the representative added, and she will not comment further out of respect for the process.[S1]
Strict Whereabouts Rules for Elite Athletes
Elite athletes must follow strict requirements for informing anti-doping officials about their locations, including during training camps and travel. They are required to provide a time and location each day to comply with rules for unannounced doping tests. Three failures within a year to meet these requirements, such as a missed test or inaccurate information given to the anti-doping agency, are punishable.[S1]
