Wood's Disappointment
Evan Rachel Wood expressed her disappointment over not being invited back for 'Practical Magic 2', revealing that none of her original co-stars, including Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock, reached out to her. She shared on Instagram that she appreciated Joey King reaching out, as no one else from the original film did. Wood played Kylie, the daughter of Bullock's character, in the 1998 cult classic.[S1]
Earlier this summer, Wood told Entertainment Tonight that it was 'sad' not to be asked back, as the cast bonded as children. She noted that missing the chance to see the cast and house as an adult was something that couldn't be faked. Wood also mentioned that she had read the book and felt the sequel wasn't following it, which might have justified her return.[S1]
King's Response and Director's Explanation
Joey King, who takes over the role of Kylie in the sequel, told The Hollywood Reporter at the premiere that she had a 'lovely' conversation with Wood. King expressed gratitude for Wood's support and praised her talent and beauty, saying she felt grateful to play Kylie at this age. Director Susanne Bier explained to Variety that the recasting was not personal, as the characters in the story are right out of college, necessitating a recast. Last year, Wood revealed on Instagram that she had offered her services for the sequel, even for one scene or line, but was told they were recasting.
