Foster responds to Brody's remarks
Erin Foster, who created the Netflix comedy Nobody Wants This, has spoken out about remarks on Palestine made by the show's lead, Adam Brody. On a forthcoming installment of Amanda Hirsch's Not Skinny but Not Fat podcast, Foster was asked to respond to Brody's GQ interview, in which he voiced backing for a free Palestine. Foster said she holds a different view from Brody yet considers that acceptable, likening their workplace to a dinner table where people argue and hold differing opinions.[S1][S2][S3][S4][S5][S6][S7]
Foster, who drew on her own path of converting to Judaism before she wed her husband when creating the series, said she wants Jewish viewers to feel seen and to know she understands their emotions. She called the show a love letter to Judaism, noting that when positive portrayals of Jewish people are scarce, such representation matters. She also said differing opinions are everyone's right, and that she can only speak to why she made the show and what it is meant to convey.[S1]
Brody's GQ interview and its fallout
In his GQ interview, Brody said he had discussed the Israel-Gaza conflict extensively in his personal life but had not spoken about it publicly before because it rarely came up. He noted that he answers the questions he is asked and that most inquiries focus on the show. He then stated his position clearly, saying that he considers it a genocide and that he wants a free Palestine, adding that it is awful that so much death and misery have occurred but that it feels like a breaking point should have been reached earlier.[S1]
Brody, who grew up in a Jewish family but has previously described himself as not religious, faced backlash from some fans of the show after his statement. The third season of Nobody Wants This is now streaming on Netflix.[S1]
