East of Eden Dominates Netflix TV Chart
During its opening four days on Netflix, the adaptation of East of Eden drew 6.5 million views, which lifted it to the number one position on the service's weekly television chart. Zoe Kazan developed the show, and Florence Pugh appears in a starring role. It draws on John Steinbeck's 1953 book. That result put it above rival popular offerings for the Sept. 28 to Oct. 4 period.[S1][S2][S3]
The release has also triggered a notable resurgence for the source material. Penguin Classics has reported a 200% increase in sales of the novel since Netflix announced the greenlight for the adaptation. This phenomenon, often called the 'Netflix effect,' highlights how streaming hits can drive renewed interest in classic literature.[S1][S3]
Movies Chart: Unabomber Leads Overall
While East of Eden topped the TV rankings, the most-watched title overall on Netflix during the week was the film Unabomber, starring Jacob Tremblay. It amassed 24.9 million views in its second week of streaming. Other movies also outperformed the top TV titles: The Widower: 'Til Death Do Us Part took second place on the movies chart with 11.6 million views, and Tyler Perry's Doing Life followed in third with 9.3 million views.[S1]
