Mulroney's Final Episode Airs in Season 15 Premiere
Dermot Mulroney's time on NBC's Chicago Fire has come to an end. His final episode as Battalion Chief Dominic 'Dom' Pascal was the Season 15 premiere, which aired tonight. The departure was confirmed in late July, after two seasons with the series. Mulroney's character arrived at Firehouse 51 with a rocky start but eventually won over both fans and the show's characters.[S1][S2][S3]
Season 15 opened right after a tense Season 14 closer that put the majority of Firehouse 51's crew in jeopardy. Although the group came through largely without serious harm, the series now operates under a different showrunner, Victor Teran. The premiere also made clear that Taylor Kinney's Severide turned down an inspector role in favor of serving as Chief of Firehouse 51. He keeps doing fire inspections on his own time while assisting Joe (Joe Minoso) in clearing his name over allegations tied to the Season 14 finale blaze.[S1]
Showrunner Explains the Decision to Write Out Pascal
Showrunner Victor Teran spoke to Deadline about the new season and saying goodbye to Mulroney. He said that Mulroney appears in only the premiere episode but plays a critical role. Teran explained that filling the void left by Wallace Boden, portrayed by Eamonn Walker for the first 12 seasons, was an impossible task, and Mulroney provided a bridge to the future. Teran added that for the first time in 15 seasons, there will not be a chief in the house, and Severide will be leading things, a new direction the writers had been considering for a while. Closing out Mulroney's character was necessary to make space for that change.[S1]
In Dom's final moments on the show, he gives Severide advice about balancing his two passions carefully or facing major consequences. Mulroney's exit follows that of Eamonn Walker, who made a guest appearance in Season 13 after leaving as a series regular. The show's creators and writers have a history of bringing back former cast members for occasional appearances.[S1]
Mulroney's Statement and Upcoming Projects
Once word of his exit got out, Mulroney addressed fans at a convention. He described enjoying every moment of his run on the series and forming friendships with the crew. He praised the talented cast he acted alongside, saying they handed him deeply demanding material. He went on to explain that the writers chose to write the character out, and that everyone involved gave their fullest effort across two seasons.[S1]
Mulroney holds a series regular part on the Netflix drama The Hunting Wives as Jed Banks. Back in May, he said that filming on the show's second season had wrapped. On Tuesday, word came that The Hunting Wives had been picked up for a third season, arriving before Season 2 even premieres. He has additionally lined up parts in two movies: Moon People and the action film Streets.[S1]
