A first tour title after a week of comebacks
Harriet Dart claimed the first WTA Tour singles title of her career on Sunday, defeating Austria's Lilli Tagger 4-6 6-3 6-4 in the Guangzhou Open final. The 30-year-old Briton, who entered the WTA 250 event through qualifying, fell to the ground in celebration once an unreturned serve sealed the biggest win of her career.[S1][S2][S4]
The match was tight throughout. Dart lost her serve in the opening game and had to fend off a break point in her next service game before getting on the scoreboard. She broke back to level at 4-4, but the 18-year-old Tagger responded immediately and closed out the first set.[S1][S3]
Dart took the first break point of the second set to lead 5-3 and went on to level the match. In the decider, a sequence of five straight breaks ended when Dart saved two break points to hold for 5-3. She then earned two championship points on Tagger's serve, but the Austrian saved the first with a powerful serve and Dart netted a mid-court forehand on the second.[S1][S2]
Composed after that miss, Dart served out the match to 15 and converted her third championship point with a service winner. The victory was her fourth comeback from a set down in seven matches this week, underlining the resilience that has defined her run.[S1][S2]
Ranking rise and a place in Melbourne
The title lifts Dart back into the top 100 of the WTA rankings at world No 83, after she had been ranked 115th going into the tournament. That position guarantees her direct entry into the main draw of the Australian Open, the season's first Grand Slam, which takes place in January.[S1][S2]
Dart, the British No 5, reached a career-high ranking of 70th in 2024 after making the third round at Wimbledon and the second round of the US Open, but had spent most of the past two seasons outside the top 100. She has credited her work with former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli, now a Sky Sports analyst, as a major factor in her resurgence.[S1][S2]
Her hard-court form since Wimbledon has been strong: she has won 19 of 24 tour-level matches on the surface, bringing her season record on the WTA Tour to 23 victories from 34 matches, the best winning percentage of her career. Dart is also an established member of Britain's Billie Jean King Cup team and has won one WTA 250 and two WTA 125 doubles titles.[S1][S2]
Tagger's breakthrough run
Tagger, ranked 53rd and seeded fourth in Guangzhou, was the 2025 French Open junior champion and had beaten seven-time major winner Venus Williams on her way to the final. Despite the loss, the 18-year-old offered warm words to Dart during the trophy ceremony.[S2]
