Paramount Developing Cyberpunk 2077 Film
Paramount is developing a movie based on Cyberpunk 2077, the open-world science fiction role-playing game from CD Projekt Red, Variety has confirmed. Lorenzo di Bonaventura, known for producing the Transformers films, is attached to the project. CD Projekt Red, which developed the game and holds the franchise rights, will also serve as a producer.[S1][S2][S3][S4][S5][S6][S7][S8]
The game launched in December 2020 after multiple delays and is set in Night City, a neon-lit and dangerous metropolis. Players take on the role of V, a mercenary who becomes implanted with a biochip containing the digital personality of Johnny Silverhand, a rock star and infamous criminal portrayed by Keanu Reeves. V must cooperate with Johnny to separate their consciousnesses while battling the Arasaka megacorporation, which controls the dystopian city.[S1]
Even though the game's creation was rocky and its debut was hit by numerous technical faults, Cyberpunk 2077 turned into a big win for CD Projekt Red, moving 40 million units around the world. The Phantom Liberty add-on has reached 15 million copies sold.[S1]
Hollywood once treated game-to-film projects as a punchline, but they now draw large crowds to theaters. Titles such as Five Nights at Freddy's, The Super Mario Bros. Movie and The Minecraft Movie, each appealing to a younger crowd, helped drive that shift. With Cyberpunk 2077, Paramount seems to be courting an older demographic. The studio is additionally working on a Call of Duty movie with director Peter Berg, who wrote the screenplay alongside Taylor Sheridan, plus a Street Fighter film due out October 16.[S1]
