Cast and Creative Team Reunite for HBO Series
HBO has given a series order to a one-hour drama adaptation of Crazy Rich Asians, with four stars from the 2018 film set to return. Constance Wu, Henry Golding and Ronny Chieng will be series regulars, while Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh will recur. All four will reprise the roles they played in the movie. The project is based on Kevin Kwan's book series of the same name, which began with Crazy Rich Asians in 2013, followed by China Rich Girlfriend in 2015 and Rich People Problems in 2017.[S1][S2][S3][S4][S5][S6][S7][S8]
Adele Lim, one of the writers of the 2018 movie, takes on showrunner duties and executive produces. Jon M. Chu, who directed the film, also executive produces via Electric Somewhere. Kwan, Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson round out the executive producing team, with Jacobson and Simpson's Color Force having shepherded the film's development and production. Chloe Dan and Jeannine Tang executive produce for SK Global Entertainment, Naia Cucukov Richards for Lim's 100 Tigers, and Rose Lam. HBO and Warner Bros. Television share co-production duties.[S1]
From Box Office Smash to Television
Jon M. Chu directed the 2018 movie Crazy Rich Asians, which drew both strong reviews and solid ticket sales. Made for a reported $30 million, it earned more than $239 million globally and sits at a 91% approval score on Rotten Tomatoes. Talk of a follow-up film circulated for years without ever coming together. The story instead heads to television, having been greenlit by HBO. Word that a show was in development surfaced in early 2025.[S1]
Adele Lim described the project as a family reunion and said the series offers eight episodes to explore the characters and worlds of Kevin Kwan's books. She added that working with the original creative team and with HBO and Warner Bros. Television has been a dream. Kwan said he is thrilled the family is getting back together and that fans have been waiting patiently. Chu said that eight years ago the film changed his life and that bringing everyone back feels like coming home. Casey Bloys, co-chair and chief content officer of Skydance Direct-To-Consumer, and Channing Dungey, chairman of Warner Bros. Television Group and US Networks, also welcomed the return.[S1]
