The Injury and the Viral Clip
Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels suffered a dislocated left elbow on the final play of the first half. As team medical personnel attended to him, a Fox broadcast showed some of Daniels' teammates walking past him toward the locker room. That brief clip sparked a social media narrative that the players had abandoned their quarterback. Many players actually stayed on the sideline to watch Daniels being treated, and many returned to his side after trainers popped his elbow back into place, according to ESPN's John Keim.[S1]
Players Push Back
Washington left tackle Brandon Coleman strongly rejected the narrative. He said it was nonsense to suggest the team abandoned Daniels, emphasizing that Daniels is their guy and there was no malice behind the situation. Tight end Ben Sinnott also called the claims ridiculous, describing the love and brotherhood the team has for Daniels as very strong. Sinnott explained that players were trying to give the trainers space and did not want to crowd Daniels, so they stepped back and prayed, then all came back.[S1]
Coach Quinn Sets the Record Straight
Coach Dan Quinn said what actually happened was the opposite of the narrative that grew from Fox's short clip. He explained that when the half ended, referees told the players they could not delay halftime and could not stay on the field. According to Quinn, the players insisted they wanted to stay. He described the locker room at halftime as hard and emotional, saying the players were gutted because they love Daniels. Coleman and lineman Josh Conerly Jr. were the last players to leave for the locker room, along with Quinn and backup quarterbacks Marcus Mariota and Athan Kaliakmanis.[S1]
