Chen Tianyu, aged 28, warns that those who don't keep up with AI and robotics will be left behind. China leads the world in industrial robotics, with over two million robots already in its factories and rapidly growing. More than half of the global supply of industrial robots is manufactured in China, a testament to its technological prowess. This surge in automation is part of President Xi Jinping's ambitious $20 billion strategy to position China as a global innovation leader, rivaling the United States.[S1]
Inside the Factories
In Chengdu, CRP Technology's production floor is a hive of activity. Approximately 30 middle-aged employees assemble robotic arms, while a team of four young engineers focuses on a prototype robot with a unique purpose. Pang Kai, aged 31 and part of the R&D team, explains their vision: a robot that can think independently, addressing China's potential labor shortage in the next decade.[S1]
Engineers are making progress, with a single robotic arm capable of handling over 90% of repetitive tasks through programming. While they celebrate these achievements, they recognize the journey ahead is lengthy. The company, with a workforce of approximately 300, has dedicated nine years to the development of these robot arms.[S1]
The Human Cost
China's demographic challenges are fueling a rapid automation drive. With an aging population and a projected decline in numbers, the country aims to automate its manufacturing sector. By 2035, over 33% of Chinese citizens will be seniors, and the population may decrease by approximately 60 million in the coming decade. Currently, 120 million workers are employed in manufacturing, making a swift transition risky, as it could lead to massive job cuts.[S1]
Cao Li, Leapmotors' vice-president, highlights the need for maintenance and inspection despite machines' 24/7 operation. With a workforce of 25,000, including hundreds conducting final vehicle checks, the company carefully balances automation and human labor. This delicate equilibrium is essential for their manufacturing process.[S1]
