Capitals Secure 3-1 Win Over Rangers
The Washington Capitals defeated the New York Rangers 3-1 on Friday night, with Boone Jenner scoring the winning goal in the second period. Jenner's wrist shot broke a 1-1 tie with 2:22 remaining in the middle frame. Tom Wilson and Timothy Liljegren also found the net for Washington. Logan Thompson stopped 21 shots to earn the victory. Alexis Lafreniere scored the lone goal for New York.[S1][S2][S3][S4][S5][S6][S7][S8]
Shesterkin Leaves Game After Awkward Fall
Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin was forced to leave the game midway through the second period after an awkward fall into his own net. Shesterkin came out of his crease to challenge a shooter and fell as he scrambled back, catching his skate on the post and collapsing into the net. He lay on the ice for several minutes holding his right knee while receiving medical attention. He did not put any weight on his right leg as teammates helped him off the ice. Shesterkin, a 30-year-old Russian, had made 13 saves before the injury.[S1][S2][S3][S4][S5][S6][S7][S8]
Garand Steps In as Rangers Fall Short
Dylan Garand replaced Shesterkin in net and made 11 saves for the Rangers. The injury overshadowed the game and raises concerns for New York, as Shesterkin, the 2022 Vezina Trophy winner, missed a month last season with a lower-body injury that contributed to the team falling short of the playoffs. The Rangers will host the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday, while the Capitals will host the Seattle Kraken on Sunday.[S1][S2][S3][S4][S5][S6][S7][S8]
