Clark's Historic First Half Powers Indiana
Caitlin Clark delivered a performance that kept the Indiana Fever's season alive. The All-Star guard finished with 27 points and 15 assists as the sixth-seeded Fever defeated the defending WNBA champion Las Vegas Aces 99-89. Kelsey Mitchell contributed 26 points, and the home crowd chanted M-V-P throughout the game. The victory evened the best-of-three series at one game apiece, with Game 3 scheduled for Thursday in Las Vegas.[S1]
Clark made league history by becoming the first player to record a points-assists double-double in the first half of a playoff game. She had 14 points and 11 assists in the opening 20 minutes. Coach Stephanie White praised Clark's all-around impact, noting that her energy from start to finish was incredible and that she managed the game well while providing terrific defensive energy. White said that is what the team needs from her.[S1]
Fourth-Quarter Confrontation Overshadows Finish
A fourth-quarter incident between a fan and four-time league MVP A'ja Wilson marred the closing minutes. After Sophie Cunningham drew a foul, Wilson and a man in the stands appeared to point and shout at each other. Wilson walked toward the seats, and two teammates, an assistant coach and security intervened to separate them. Wilson received a technical foul for stepping off the court but was not ejected. The man was escorted out by security but was allowed to return because the Fever said he did not violate the fan code of conduct policy.[S1]
Wilson said after the game that if she sees a man come at her, taking steps toward her and pointing at her, she does not care what he said, calling it unacceptable. Aces coach Becky Hammon said she did not exactly see what happened, only the aftermath, and that she had never seen Wilson react like that, so whatever was done made Wilson feel very disrespected. Hammon added that whatever it was has no place in an arena.[S1]
Fever Hold On After Clark Fouls Out
The incident seemed to motivate Las Vegas, which trailed 90-79 when it occurred with 4:10 remaining. When Clark fouled out with 2:45 to play, the Aces cut the deficit to 92-87. But the Fever managed to hang on for the win. Clark said her mindset was that the team's back was against the wall and that the only guaranteed opportunity was those 40 minutes, so they would go down swinging if they were going to lose. She said the mentality was that this was a game they were going to win no matter what and do it for their fans.[S1]
