Rate Hike Expected Soon
Axis Bank's chief executive, Amitabh Chaudhry, has signaled that the Reserve Bank of India could raise interest rates in either October or December. His forecast is based on the narrowing gap between US and Indian interest rates, which has reached its lowest level in ten years, making domestic assets less attractive and pressuring the rupee.[S1]
Chaudhry also pointed to geopolitical tensions as an additional factor that could weigh on the Indian currency. Such pressures often force central banks to hike rates to defend the exchange rate, even if domestic inflation alone might not warrant immediate action.[S1]
Context and Implications
The prediction comes as the US Federal Reserve has been aggressively raising its benchmark rate to combat inflation. A wider rate differential typically attracts foreign capital to India, but a narrowing gap could lead to outflows, weakening the rupee further.[S1]
If the RBI follows through, it would mark a shift in policy after a period of accommodative stance. Higher rates could cool demand but also increase the cost of home loans, auto loans, and corporate borrowing, potentially slowing economic recovery.[S1]
