Retirement in Shanghai
Felix Auger-Aliassime's Asian swing ended in disappointment on Wednesday when the Canadian retired with a knee injury during his round-of-16 match at the Shanghai Masters. He stopped while trailing Norway's Casper Ruud 5-2. The fourth-seeded Auger-Aliassime had won two consecutive three-set matches before calling it early against the 20th-seeded Ruud.[S1][S2][S3][S4][S5][S6][S7][S8]
Coaching and Ranking Implications
Auger-Aliassime recently hired Ivan Ljubicic as his new coach, but their work may be paused depending on how severe the injury proves to be. The Montreal native is projected to drop at least one spot from his No. 4 position when the new rankings are released next week.[S1]
Davis Cup Outlook
Tennis Canada will be hoping Auger-Aliassime can recover in time for the Davis Cup Finals, scheduled for Nov. 23-29 in Italy. His availability remains uncertain as the extent of the knee injury is not yet known.[S1]
