Second-half blitz secures Arsenal win
Arsenal scored three goals in seven second-half minutes to beat Lille 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday 13 October 2026, maintaining their perfect start in the Champions League league phase. The Gunners had been frustrated for an hour before Jurrien Timber lifted a finish over the goalkeeper from Noni Madueke's pass in the 64th minute. Eberechi Eze added the second in the 67th with a slight deflection from substitute Bukayo Saka's pass, and Saka himself scored the third in the 71st after combining with Martin Odegaard and Kai Havertz, who had been introduced alongside him after the opening goal.[S1][S2][S3][S4][S5][S6][S7][S8]
Mikel Arteta rotated his side for the visit of Lille, making five changes from the 2-1 win over Leeds as Arsenal began a run of eight games in 25 days. The substitutes helped ensure Arsenal followed last month's win over Napoli with another victory. Bruno Guimaraes, starting for the first time at the Emirates Stadium as an Arsenal player, and Eze missed the best chances of the first period. Lille did not register a shot on target, although former Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud received a positive reception on his return to the Emirates Stadium as a substitute.[S1]
Saka answers Arteta's challenge
Arteta had challenged Saka to start scoring two or three goals per game in his pre-match press conference. The 25-year-old needed only six minutes to find the net after coming off the bench, having provided an assist with his first touch. Arteta said he would be very happy and welcome it if his comments had motivated Saka. Saka is up to four goals for the season for Arsenal, plus another two on international duty with England. According to Arteta, Saka had not been feeling that good on the day and the previous day due to a bit of an illness but was really keen to contribute, and he came on and made a huge impact.[S1]
Saka's goal, struck from around eight yards out, was one of several from close range this season and provided further evidence of him getting into more dangerous areas. The assist, from the right-hand side, came from Havertz, the striker with whom he has often been seen interchanging positions. The positional fluidity is helping Saka as he tries to boost his numbers in front of goal. Saka has now scored 19 goals in major European competitions for Arsenal, the outright second most of any player for the club after Thierry Henry (42). He has provided nine assists in the Champions League for Arsenal, with only Henry (16) and Cesc Fabregas (14) providing more.[S1]
Arteta and Ancelotti react
Arteta said Arsenal had moments in the first half where they arrived into a very dangerous position with a lot of advantage, but their technical quality was not good enough to deliver moments of real threat and sustain real attacks. He made a change at half-time and felt the technical level increased. He described the goals as a joy to watch, with three different players and a number of different players participating. On his triple substitution, Arteta said he felt it was the right moment to do it, given the way the game was panning out and the way the opponent was behaving, and that they needed different kinds of players, but he gave credit to the starters and the ones who came on.[S1]
Lille boss Davide Ancelotti said it was really tough because of the players Arsenal always have on the bench, who can change the rhythm of the game. He said it was difficult for his side to keep up with the rhythm Arsenal put on after 60 minutes. Ancelotti said Lille have to keep the good things they did for 55 or 60 minutes, and that to come to the Emirates and get a good result you have to have many things aligned, which they did not have. He added that the score was too hard on the players, who did not deserve it.[S1]
