A title sealed in Mexico, celebrated in Brazil

Kimi Antonelli turned up at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix with the 2026 Drivers' Championship already in his hands. The Mercedes driver wrapped up the crown in his second season by taking third place at the Mexico City Grand Prix, which made him Formula 1's youngest World Champion at 20 years old. He took the record that Sebastian Vettel had held.[S1]

Speaking to reporters on Thursday's media day in Brazil, Antonelli said the two days since had been remarkable but that he had not yet found the time to fully absorb or process what he had achieved. He described himself as very happy and said the situation still did not feel real to him.[S1]

Messages from rivals and a tribute in Sao Paulo

The new champion said he had been flooded with kind words and gestures of support, including numerous videos of celebrations from his hometown. He explained that singling out one moment was difficult because every message had been generous, but he named Vettel's note as especially memorable, describing it as profound, full of meaning and carrying plenty of guidance for what lies ahead.[S1]

He also mentioned hearing from Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris, saying each had been warm towards him and that he felt grateful for the respect shown. Away from the track, Antonelli said he had used a few days to rest and enjoy some activities, with time spent alongside the Senna family standing out as something he would remember permanently.[S1]

Antonelli also unveiled a helmet design paying tribute to Ayrton Senna for the Brazilian Grand Prix weekend.[S2]

What Mercedes still want from the remaining races

Mercedes remain in contention for the Constructors' Championship and could secure it in Brazil this weekend. Beyond that prize, Antonelli said his aim is to savour the races left on the calendar while continuing to chase victories, starting at a circuit he enjoys and where he rates the crowd highly.[S1]

He framed the weekend as a chance to restart on a strong note after the title was settled and to target a win, while also making the most of the closing rounds, in which the team still intends to perform well.[S1]
