Sequel Announcement and Film Development
Ali Hazelwood announced on Tuesday that she will release a sequel to her bestselling novel The Love Hypothesis. The new book, titled The Two-Body Problem, is scheduled for publication on Feb. 2, 2027. In a social media post, Hazelwood shared the cover and expressed her excitement about returning to the characters Olive Smith and Adam Carlsen. She noted that the recent film adaptation and its cast made her fall for the couple all over again, and that revisiting them was a pleasure. She also acknowledged that unannounced sequels can surprise readers and gave them permission to skip the book if they prefer.[S1]
Hazelwood further revealed that MRC is developing a film based on The Two-Body Problem for Amazon MGM Studios, though no additional details were provided. The sequel is described as spanning a couple of years and blending slice-of-life moments with postdoctoral turmoil and an unflinching look at a long-term relationship's hardest challenge: deciding what to have for dinner. The Love Hypothesis has turned into a cultural touchstone since it first appeared in 2021. It reached the New York Times bestseller list, became a fixation on BookTok, and served as the breakthrough that made Hazelwood widely recognized. Over 10 million copies of her works have been purchased globally, and multiple titles are being lined up for screen adaptations. The movie version arrived on Prime Video on Sept. 23, with Claire Scanlon directing and Elizabeth Cantillon producing.[S1]
The story, which originated as Star Wars Reylo fan fiction featuring Daisy Ridley's Rey and Adam Driver's Kylo Ren, follows Olive Smith, a graduate student and Stanford Ph.D. candidate, who enters a fake romance with the notoriously stern Adam Carlsen, known to his students as Dr. Evil. The ruse is intended to reassure her friend Anh that Olive's feelings for her bestie's current love interest are entirely behind her.
