The Return of Ali G

Amazon MGM has unveiled the official trailer for 'Ali G: Who Iz I?', a mockumentary that brings back Sacha Baron Cohen's iconic character. The film's synopsis reveals that after 20 years of leisure, Ali G discovers his girlfriend Julie, played by Morgana Robinson, is eight months pregnant. He then heads to America to regain his former status, but encounters threats to his and his child's existence.[S1]

Sacha Baron Cohen debuted his iconic character on Channel 4's "The 11 O'Clock Show" in 1998, which paved the way for the spin-off "Da Ali G Show" a few years later. The character's first feature film, "Ali G Indahouse," arrived in 2002 under the direction of Mark Mylod. For this latest production, Cohen steps behind the camera for his directorial debut, while also writing and producing the film through his company, Four by Two Films.[S1][S2]

Secret Filming and Cameos

Cohen filmed 'Who Iz I?' in secret, similar to his previous projects like 'Borat' and 'Brüno'. His comedy style involves embodying outlandish characters and provoking reactions from unsuspecting people. As Ali G, he has interviewed notable figures such as Noam Chomsky, Andy Rooney, and Newt Gingrich.[S1]

The project was first teased in July when Cohen posted a video on Instagram in character, and he was spotted at Wimbledon. The trailer shows Ali G taking classes, walking streets, and appearing on various shows, often accompanied by his pregnant girlfriend. Cohen narrates that he's been gone for 20 years and plans to get back on top with a 'documentary' featuring real people, not actors.[S1][S2]

Release and Other Projects

'Ali G: Who Iz I?' is set to hit theaters on Oct. 23. The film is produced by Cohen, with Petr Jákl and Emily Kob as executive producers. Outside of this project, Cohen recently played Mephisto in the Marvel series 'Ironheart' and starred in 'Ladies First' for Netflix and 'Balls Up' for Prime Video.[S1][S2]
